Until recently, ask any neutral fan which he thinks is the best soccer team in Manchester and the answer would invariably be Manchester United.
But not anymore. Since the buyout of last season, Manchester City are now the richest team in the world and they have wasted no time in buying Robinho from Real Madrid on transfer deadline day last season. This season, they’ve been much busier in the transfer market, adding star players such as Gareth Barry from Aston Villa, Emmanuel Adebayor and Kolo Toure from Arsenal, Roque Santa Cruz from Blackburn, Carlos Tevez from Manchester United, and Joleon Lescott from Everton. With these new stars, Manchester City are now a force to be reckoned with and they wasted no time in announcing their title credentials by opening the new season with 3 wins in a row and 0 goals conceded.
What about the other team in Manchester? Manchester United has lost the 2008 FIFA World Player of the Year to Real Madrid. Cristiano Ronaldo’s replacement, Antonio Valencia, hasn’t looked convincing so far and doesn’t look like replacing the 80 million dollar man anytime soon. Dimitar Berbatov, last season’s star signing at 30 million pounds, has failed to meet expectations so far, and to compound their problems, United still hasn’t replaced ageing stars such as Paul Scholes and Ryan Giggs.
Still, only a fool would doubt Sir Alex Ferguson and he’s bound to have some tricks up his sleeve. Can the sky blues take over the dominant red devils as the premier team in Manchester? The season has just started and there are many matches yet to be played. This is going to be one heck of a season!
