Spitz made his debut at the 1965 Maccabiah Games in Tel Aviv (Israel), where he won 5 gold medals. Many months later, at the the Pre-Olympic Games in Mexico, he won two medals (100-meter butterfly and 200-meter butterfly). At the 1967 Pan American Games in Canada, Mark won also 5 gold medals (100m butterfly, 200m butterfly, 400m freestyle relay, 800m freestyle relay, 400m medley relay).
